Case Study: Revitalization Of Deerfoot Meadows Parking Complex

In this case study, we explore how we tackled one of our biggest projects to date: The revitalization of the Deerfoot Meadows parking complex.

Deerfoot Meadows is a shopping complex; Deerfoot Meadows and its property manager, JLL, are long-standing, top clients of our business. They trust us for our reliability and reputation. We’ve also done work on another very large JLL property, CrossIron Mills

We were hired for ongoing asphalt repair and line painting; here’s how we approached this massive project:

Project Details

Scope

Deerfoot Meadows is a massive shopping centre, covering over 3.5 million square feet of total development. The area is located right next to the Deerfoot Trail, Alberta’s business north-south freeway, and Glenmore Trail, which connects to the Trans-Canada Highway.

Together, these roads see over 200,000 vehicles each day; off-ramps connect these freeways to the mall. Deerfoot Meadows sees a lot of traffic, which means it needs repairs and line painting on its parking lots more frequently than less trafficked sites.

Our goal was to repair over 30 areas throughout this massive complex and provide line painting to refresh these areas.

Objectives

The objectives for our client and our company were clear:

  • Uphold Deerfoot Meadows’ reputation as a premier shopping destination by improving the look of the parking complex.
  • Improve safety by repairing defects in the asphalt and marking parking spaces and lanes more clearly.
  • Improve the flow of traffic with asphalt repair and line painting.

Challenges

Working on a parking complex in such a large, heavily trafficked space presents numerous challenges. Our teams had to implement extensive safety measures to ensure that our work did not put anyone at risk. At the same time, we had to coordinate our work to allow patrons of Deerfoot Meadows enough parking space while still completing the project in a timely manner.

Strategies Employed

To complete the project on time and without incident, we coordinated with JLL to work off-peak hours whenever possible. We worked in teams, sectioning off the areas we were working on to prevent disruptions.

For safety, we created a traffic control plan using cones and barriers to divert traffic from the work site. Our highly trained asphalt contractors operated the machinery we used with extreme caution to prevent any injuries or damage to property.

Outcomes

The project was a resounding success. Our client was extremely happy with the parking complex; the whole process was seamless, and completed on time with no incidents. The parking areas are fully repaired, the line painting has improved aesthetics and the flow of traffic, and by eliminating cracks and potholes, we’ve reduced the risk of property damage and injury.
