Calgary Paving Company Implements Safety Measures To Keep Crews Cool During Record-Breaking Heatwave

CALGARY, AB:  Infinity Asphalt, a leading asphalt maintenance company serving Calgary and the surrounding areas, has made the safety of its crews a top priority throughout this summer’s unprecedented heat.  The summer of 2024 saw a record-breaking heatwave in July and scorching temperatures continuing right through the month of August.  In response, Infinity Asphalt has implemented strategies that go above and beyond required health and safety regulations in order to ensure the highest level of protection for all of its crew members.

Infinity Asphalt is Canada’s fastest growing asphalt paving and maintenance company, that offers services including paving, asphalt repairs, parking lot line painting, seal coating, crack filling, and more.  Dedicated to top-quality outcomes delivered with exceptional customer service, the company has been built on the principles of leadership, effort, attitude, and determination—principles that also extend to the way it treats its valued employees.  When Infinity crews face extreme heat conditions, strategies are implemented to make sure they remain safe and as comfortable as possible.  Recently, the company’s comprehensive heat safety measures were even featured on CTV News.

Summer is the optimal season for asphalt work.  Warm temperatures allow asphalt to be properly laid and compacted, improve its adhesion, and help to reduce its risk of cracking over time.  For Infinity’s crews, however, this sometimes means working under the blazing sun for hours on end.  “The asphalt, when it comes out above 300 degrees Fahrenheit (149℃), that’s really hot already,” said Shawn Adams, the COO of Infinity Asphalt, “so when the guys are standing over it, it’s almost like an oven.”  With daytime highs exceeding 30 degrees Celsius for days on end, conditions such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can pose a real risk.

Infinity Asphalt takes a multi-pronged approach to ensuring the safety of its crews in extreme heat.  Company-wide measures include providing ice water and electrolyte solutions to crews as well as light-coloured, breathable shirts and sun hats, adjusting work hours to earlier and later in the day to avoid peak heat, providing additional time off when possible, and closely monitoring employees for symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
